Melmoth (2019)

Just LOOK at this cover – could it be any more gorgeous and gothic? It’s beautiful and menacing in equal measure, much like the story itself, and it’s a cover that I just want to show people and say “look at this! Look at how gorgeous a book cover can be!”

It’s got to rate as one of my favourites. The pattern of the feathers is eerie and beautiful, etched in a gorgeous series of lines which wave across the page in dark, mysterious shades of blue, as if it they were painted at the edge of midnight. Contrasted with the starker shades of black and grey, the colour glows with magical allure. It’s almost so hypnotic that you don’t initially see the golden disc hovering in the corner, or the series of silhouetted birds flying off in the distance.

The design seems full shadows and secrets, and even though the title is printed in large, pale print it comes across as a whisper rather than a statement. It’s so full of atmosphere which perfectly complements Sarah Perry’s writing that I can barely think of anything else to say other than LOOK at it and enjoy it and marvel at the sinister beauty and power it conveys.
